Dear ISS Community

It is with great sorrow that I send out a message concerning the loss of Dr. Gopi Podila who was killed in February of 2010 in a senseless shooting at the University of Alabama.  Gopi was a friend and colleague of mine and many in the ISS, and a long time member of the ISS governing council. He was with the ISS from the beginning and a positive force within it.  He was the chairman of the Biology Department and a great scientist who made significant scientific advances in plant and fungal genetics.  He was someone I could always depend on to provide alternative views and clarity on social and scientific issues.  He was a gentle man who had a great smile and infectious laughter.  He will be greatly missed.  In honor of Gopi's contributions to the ISS and field of symbiosis the society will institute a recurrent Memorial award to be given at the ISS conferences for meritorious presentations.  I invite ISS members to post comments, stories and/or images of Gopi so that we will remember and honor our friend and colleague.

A time to mourn, a time to reflect, a time to appreciate

Sincerely,

Rusty Rodriguez
