I am reposting a message I got from my NemaSym colleagues, Joerg

    Dear NSF NemaSym RCN Colleagues,

We write as a reminder of an upcoming deadline and hope we find you and yours well and with fruitful research results in your respective laboratories.

Next Thursday, July 1, 2010, is the application deadline for NSF NemaSym RCN 2010 travel and accomadation packages. Students, postdoctoral associates, and core participants may apply for travel funding to attend NemaSym meetings and workshops. Funding to a maximum of $1,200 (US) will be given to to help defray costs of attendance to the RCN meeting. The funding total is for up to 25 participants. For international core-participants, NemaSym RCN will be able to provide support for expenses incurred in the US, including per diem and accommodations, as well as the US portion of your travel. Participants will be reimbursed in the form of a "stipend" upon attendance at the meeting.

We look forward to your attendance at NemaSym 2010. Thank you for helping build a strong nematode-bacterium symbiosis research community! Visit NemaSym often.

    Symbiotically yours,
    S. Patricia Stock (NemaSym RCN Director, U Arizona)

ISS members can now access Symbiosis, the journal, through the ISS website. Go to the member-only section. You will only be able to see this tab on the left side after you log in. Select "Access to Symbiosis, the journal". This takes you to a website where you will find a link to the Springer site and you can read Symbiosis articles at your leisure.

The next Beneficial Microbes conference sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology will be held in Miami, FL. The abstract submission deadline is 11:59 PM CST, August 6, 2010.  Student travel grants are available, with awardees selected based on geographic diversity and abstract quality.

I have been to the previous two meetings and they were excellent. It is a small meeting with great speakers and opportunities to meet people in the field.

For more information look at our calendar or visit the ASM website for this meeting.

Wier et al describe the transcriptional patterns of the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri and the bobtailed squid Euprymna scolopes. The authors report a distinct diel pattern where the bacteria utilize either glycerol or chitin as an energy source and the squid remodels the epithelium lining the crypts housing the bacteria inside the light organ each morning.
